Beauty is the foundation of aesthetics which reveals the soul of everything.

A man looks at a flower, the flower smiles, Zen. The man’s soul merges with the flower’s soul.

Commentary 1

Everything that is, has a soul, a parcel of beauty, but not easily perceived.

Commentary 2

Contemplation of the divine is the origin of Beauty. The divine is the true substance of art.

Beauty incarnates the whole universe in individual images.

ΠΕΡΙ ΤΟΥ ΚΑΛΟΥ. On Beauty, Plotinus

Τὰ ὄντα ἡ ϰαλλονή ἐςτιν : Being is beauty.

Ταὐτὸν ἀγαθόν τε ϰαὶ ϰαλόν : Goodness and beauty are the same.

Θεῷ, ὅτι ἐϰεῖθεν τὸ ϰαλόν : Because Beauty comes from God.

Commentary 4

The sublime beauty of a sunset is the spiritual, the soul of a flamboyant sky incarnated in the material.

Just as the beauty of a temple, a mosque or a cathedral is the soul, the spiritual incarnated in the material.

Metaphysic of Art in the words of Nietzsche: ‘Als ästhetisches Phänomen ist das Dasein und die Welt ewig gerechtfertigt’, Die Geburt der Tragödie. Existence and the world are only eternally justified if they are an aesthetic phenomenon.

‘Es ist die ontologische Funktion des Schönen den Abgrund zwischen dem Idealen und dem Wirklichen zu schliessen’. Die Aktualität den Schönen. Gadamer. ‘The ontological function of Beauty closes up the abyss between the ideal and the real’. In other words, between the spiritual and material.

According to the Sufis one of Allah’s attributes is Beauty (Jamâl) – see Majma ‘Al Bahrayn, ‘The Confluence of Two Oceans’ by Darâ Shokûh as quoted by Daryush Shayegan.

Baudelaire said that turning to the Divine brings out the genius of a poet.

Everything is beauty and ugly at the same time. In a great work of art, beauty is overwhelming. In minor objects and things beauty and ugly are always present, but beauty is not immediately perceived.

Commentary 10

Beauty is an inherent quality in things and is not only in the spirit which contemplates it, as believes David Hume.

Kant ‘Schön ist, das was … allgemein gefällt‘. Beauty is whatever pleases universally.

Lao-Tzu, on the other hand says, tiān xià jiē zhī měi zhī wèi měi. sī è jǐ: ‘If everyone agrees on what is beauty, it is ugly.’

Le beau est le fondement de l’esthétique, il révèle l’âme d’une chose.

L’homme regarde la fleur, la fleur sourit, Zen. L’âme de l’homme rejoint l’âme de la fleur.

Tout ce qui est, a une âme, une parcelle de beauté, mais il n’est pas toujours facile de l’apercevoir.

La contemplation du divin est à l’origine du Beau. Le divin est le contenu véritable de l’art.

Le Beau incarne tout l’univers dans des figures individuelles.

Τὰ ὄντα ἡ ϰαλλονή ἐςτιν : L’être c’est la beauté.

Ταὐτὸν ἀγαθόν τε ϰαὶ ϰαλόν : Le bien et la beauté sont la même chose.

Θεῷ, ὅτι ἐϰεῖθεν τὸ ϰαλόν : Parce que de Dieu vient le Beau.

La sublime beauté d’un coucher de soleil est le spirituel, l’âme du ciel flamboyant incarné dans le matériel.

De même la beauté d’un temple, d’une mosquée ou d’une cathédrale est l’âme, le spirituel incarné dans le matériel.

‘Es ist die ontologische Funktion des Schönen den Abgrund zwischen dem Idealen und dem Wirklichen zu schliessen’. Die Aktualität den Schönen. Gadamer. ‘La fonction ontologique du Beau consiste à refermer l’abîme ouvert entre l’idéal et le réel’. Autrement dit entre le spirituel et le matériel.

Tout est à la fois beau et laid. Dans une grande œuvre d’art, le beau est prédominant. Dans les objets et choses mineurs le beau et le laid sont toujours là, mais le beau n’apparaît pas immédiatement.

La beauté est une qualité inhérente aux choses elles-mêmes et n’est pas seulement dans l’esprit qui la contemple comme le pense David Hume.
